Walter M. Brierley, of Sicklerville, NJ, (originally Philadelphia, PA) at the age of 64, died on January 9th, 2025, just as he lived his life, surrounded by his loving family, after a courageous fight for a second lung transplant.
Walt was born on June 24th, 1960 in the Kensington section of Philadelphia. The Brierley family moved to Juniata Park in 1974. He dedicated much of his career to his work as a Rigger with Local 161, a role he took immense pride in. Among his many accomplishments, he played a pivotal part in one of the nation’s most historic undertakings: the transport of the Liberty Bell to its new home at Liberty Center in 2003, a moment that stands as a testament to his skill and dedication.
Walt was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Mary Jane Brierley, and his brother, Chris Brierley. He is survived by his wife Sharon (nee Angstadt), and his three daughters, Kelsey (Will), Bridget, and McKayla. He is also survived by his brothers and sisters: William Brierley (Jeannette), Jo-Mary Barr (the late Cameron), Rita Sigmund (John), and Mattew Brierley (Jeanine). He will be sadly missed by his godchildren, Gene Sigmund, Keith Brierley, and Samantha Greipp, as well as many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great nephews.
His larger than life personality fit his big and strong stature. His humor, kindness, and protective love was blessed upon so many. God gave him all girls because he had the love and care that was needed for an all girl family, the epitome of a girl dad. He called himself “Pop” to his beloved grand-fur-children, Chloe, Skye, Jade, and Keef.
Family and friends are invited to his viewing and funeral on Saturday, January 18th, 2025 at 11:45 AM in Holy Innocents Church, located at L Street & Hunting Park Avenue, Philadelphia, PA 19124. Walt’s funeral mass will begin at 1:30 PM and his interment will be held privately at a later date.
