Wanda Barnes

Wanda Barnes (nee Kukowski) passed away peacefully on March 18th, 2019 after her long, courageous battle with COPD and Dementia. Wanda was best known for dedicating her life to serving and helping others. For many years she managed her mother's bar, "Angie's" in Frankford and took great pride in brightening the days of the workers from the many nearby factories, Philly firefighters at Ladder 15 (Foulkrod Street), and many city workers who often stopped in for a free bowl of soup or sandwich. Wanda was also an expert hair stylist, who developed her talents during her time at Mercy Vocational Catholic High School and while caring for her friends in Frankford and Northwood (especially the Simpson A.A. and Fillmore Street moms) who were regulars in her home on Saturday mornings for a cup of coffee and great cut, color or "perm". In her free time, she volunteered to help our city by serving as a long time 23rd Ward committee woman. "Miss Wanda", as she was affectionately called, always won at her polling location simply because she was loved by the entire neighborhood. She was a champion in many bowling leagues, loved her casino excursions and her Sundays spent with her best girlfriends. She was most proud of her grandchildren that she deeply loved. When called to babysit, Mom-Mom was never content just sitting around the houseoff to the zoo, playground, flea market, or aquarium they went. Wanda will be dearly missed by all who knew her. She is the wife of the late John, devoted mom of Christine, Jo-Ann, John (Karen) and David (Melissa). Proud Mom-Mom of Nick, Angela, Griffin, Liam, Kristian, Matt, Amanda, and "Bach" of Mason and Morgan. Relatives and friends are invited to her viewing and funeral on Saturday March 23rd from 10 AM to 11:45 AM in St. Bartholomew's Church (Located at Harbison and Cheltenham Avenues. Please use the main church entrance on Harbison Avenue). Funeral Mass will begin at 12 noon and her interment will be held privately next week in Oakland Cemetery. Wanda loved her pets and adopted many over the years, so in lieu of flowers please adopt a pet or make a donation to
